I'd been waiting quite a while for this movie to come out, being a huge fan of Mads and Westerns in general it seemed like a marriage made in heaven. On the whole I thought it was a good film, well paced and with good dialogue, but it did leave me feeling as if improvements could have been made if more time had been given to establish the Danish characters. I loved Mikael Persbrandt as Jon's brother Peter and would have liked to have seen more of the warm relationship between the two (which was wonderfully played), as well as a bit more establishing stuff in their home town. I felt as if Jon could have been far better sketched out and therefore more sympathetic if time had been taken to show his life in the town, and possibly made the townsfolk slightly less two dimensional into the bargain. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is usually a joy to watch, but quite honestly his villain was more a cartoon character than a "ex-military hero turned bad", and again I felt as if this could have avoided if he could have been given a lot more backstory rather than just have it rattled over in two lines by the town's sheriff. Obviously he's a psychopath, so why not show how that came about rather than just have him marching around twirling his moustache and shooting old women in the head. It's either lazy storytelling or slaphappy editing, either way it doesn't made for much emotional investment for the audience. All in all, a good old fashioned Western, if a little silly towards the end although I couldn't help but feel an opportunity had been missed. The story of Danish settlers to the US is a fascinating one, and this movie barely even tickled the surface.
